Don Bosco Lourdes Official Name: Archdiocesan Shrine Of Our Lady Of Lourdes Location: Punta Princesa, Cebu City Primary Service: Parish – Oratory and Youth Center – Kindergarten – Training Center – School Services – Social Services Salesian Community Directory History Parish Our Lady of Lourdes Parish was officially and canonically established on January 27, 1957. Daily Oratory and Youth Center Mama Margaret Training Center The Mama Margaret Training Center aims at reaching out to needy out-of-school youths and gives them the opportunity to learn a trade, to help them find an honest way of learning a livelihood and at the same time evangelize these youths in the process of learning a trade. Courses offered include skills for Dressmaking, Tailoring, High-Speed Sewing together with the catechism and other formative experiences. Scholarship Program The parish scholarship program sends many children to elementary, high school and college education through a conglomeration of sponsors that provided assistance to over 522 children whose parents cannot afford to send them to school – either because they do not have a permanent income or, the family is far too large for every child to be sent to school. Aside from the benefits related to school needs, students are nurtured to develop their skills and personalities through the formation and seminars and cultural programs offered. Hand in hand with the child development, the enhancement of the family life and the strengthening of the community organization through the basic ecclesial community is also promoted. Feeding Program The Feeding Program is a parish-community based service program which aims to uplift the nutritional status of poor and malnourished children. Daily lunchtime meals are served at the Feeding Center to the children beneficiaries as well as to their mothers. Aside from the feeding sessions, seminars on catechism, home healthcare, family life and child development are also integrated into the program. The Center also offers formation for mothers on proper hygiene, herbal making and natural family planning. It also ventures into self-sufficiency programs such as catering services for weddings and special occasions. Medical and Dental Clinic / PT/OT Center The medical and dental clinic was to render service to these people, with the holdings of general consultation for all age groups such as morbidity cases, prenatal and post natal cases, natural family and referral of cases for the poor and marginalized families in the parish. With the collaborative project with the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SSHJM) a PT/OT Center was established to serve the poor and indigent families in the localities of Labangon, Basak, Pardo and some depressed areas of Cebu City. It aims to provide theraphy services for children with special needs, especially those with physical disabilities patients. Multi-Purpose Cooperative The Multi-Purpose Cooperative is part of the parish Service Committee that takes care of the temporal, material and socio-economic needs of the parishioners. It is intentionally multi-purpose so that it can legally engage in any businesses that may help uplift the economic condition of its members. Because of its juridical identity, legal privileges and tax free benefits, all businesses of the parish are ought to be taken cared of by the cooperative. Salesian Community Fr. Together with outstanding leaders and civic-spirited people Fr. Clifford and Fr. Jose Bosch bound themselves to build a church on a 4,009 square meter lot donated by the late Pablo and Angela Atillo which was officially donated to the Archdiocese of Cebu on March 2, 1956 and was formally accepted on June 3, 1956. In the same year, a small wooden convent was built by the late Eliseo Cornejo. In 1962, a draft of the architectural design of the proposed church was conceived by Engr. Plutarco Diaz, a faculty member of Cebu Institute of Technology. With Father Jose Bosch-SDB as the new parish priest the development of the parish was brought to newer heights. He acquired the lot where the present church is now located and rolled a huge rock from Buhisan River for the laying of the cornerstone of the new proposed church. An 18 meter-high concrete parabolic shell of the church was erected in 1970 of which the church boasts an overall length of sixty meters and transepts of 22.3 meters. It took over 16 years to finish the present church of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish. Don Bosco Retreat House DBRH boasts of facilities conducive for meditation and prayer. It has a large function room, 2 dormitories, a chapel, a reflection garden, a rooftop with a panoramic view of Bacolod City, the sea and the island of Panay, and many others. Salesian Community Fr. This task fell on the shoulders of Fr. Franco Uras. And the vision became a reality at the majestic hilltop of Mambucal, Murcia, through the generosity of the Barandiaran family. This oasis of spirituality came to be known as the Don Bosco Retreat House (DBRH). Henceforth, DBRH became a place where people start, revitalize, or even enrich their spiritual lives. Don Bosco Mati Official Name: Don Bosco Training Center Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish of Don Bosco Location: Dahican, Mati, Davao Oriental Primary Service: Parish – Training Center – Youth Center – Social Services Salesian Community Directory History Parish Don Bosco-Mati is both a parish and a training center. The parish was established in 1998 upon the mandate of the local Ordinary. The parish named in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus has 35 small chapels located in mountain barangays and seaside communities, with 2800 families in its fold. Half of these chapels can be reached only by motorcycle due to a very poor road network while the rest is accessible only by foot because the road is yet to be developed. Majority of these chapels have no electricity and no communication facilities. Yet, despite the very spartan lifestyle, the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs), a movement within the Church whereby the Catholic faith is propagated and shared among groups of families, usually neighbors, in view of integral evangelization, is very much alive and well-organized. Although economically hard-pressed, the faith is strong among its members composed mostly of farmers, ordinary laborers and fisherfolks. Training Center The training center was operationalized in 1995 offering training courses in Mechanical and Automotive Technologies. The center is effective in its program because it is able to qualify the graduates to address the skills requirements of the small industries in Mati and the big ones in Davao City. However, the distance of Mati from Davao City is a critical factor in the job placement of the trainees. With this, Don Bosco addressed the situation by providing training programs that are not only relevant to local needs but can likewise generate gainful local employment. Hence, in 2003, the Center opened the Agri-Mechanical Technology and Integrated Farming Technology courses. Courses Offered: Mechanical Technology Automotive Technology Integrated Farming Technology Agri-Mechanical Technology Other Services 1. Spiritual Formation - A monthly recollection is rendered to the trainees toward spiritual maturity. 2. On-the-Job Training - All trainees undergo Industry exposure prior to graduation. 3. Personal Development Assistance - DBTC guarantees a caring and accommodating teaching and guidance staff to make the training enjoyable and productive for the trainees. 4. Entrepreneurial Training - A training on small enterprise is rendered to trainees for additional knowledge and skills as they venture towards gainful employment status Salesian Community Fr. It sits in the third of the Davao Provinces and is the poorest of the three (Davao City, Davao del Sur, Daval Oriental). In October 5, 1992, the Salesians of Don Bosco constructed a Training Center in Dahican, Mati, Davao Oriental. People have nurtured high hopes in Don Bosco’s presence as a great push for the development of Mati and the surrounding towns of Davao Oriental. Don Bosco Victorias Official Name: Don Bosco Technical Institute Location: Vicmico, Victorias, Negros Occidental Primary Service: Elementary School and Technical High School – Boarding House – Training Center – Parish Official Name: St. Joseph the Worker Parish Location: Vicmico, Victorias, Negros Occidental Primary Service: Parish – Festive Youth Center – Social Services Salesian Community Directory History Elementary and Technical High School with Courses in Computer Technology, Electronics, Mechanics DBTI offers basic education and in partnership with the Local Government of Victorias City, has been offering free preschool education to less privileged families. The drawing-power of Don Bosco-Victorias is its technical curriculum with courses in Machine Shop, Electronics and Computer Technology and Practical Electricity. No other schools offer such course to their high school students. These technical courses became the foundation for students who dream to be engineers or who wish to join the country’s vocational workforce where technician skills soon serve as pillars of the country’s dream towards industrialization Boarding House To accommodate students coming from the northern and southern part of Negros and from nearby islands and provinces, the school opened a boarding house in 1953. During the period of 1955-1962, Don Bosco-Victorias served as a minor seminary of the Salesians where young candidates to the Salesian life took their preparatory training until a permanent seminary was set up in Bacoor, Pampanga. Don Bosco Training Center In 1996. The company found itself on the verge of bankruptcy and was forced in 1998 to sell its assets, spin-off some departments which depend on it (one of which is the DBTI) and resort to series of retrenchment of workers. The ugly effects linger even up to the present. The families whose sole source of living is in VICMICO, find themselves in gruesome financial difficulties, unable to afford college education for their children. As a proactive move, DBTI in 2003 opened the training center to provide young people ages 18-24, an option for a better future through technical training that would lead them to gainful employment. In March 1952, a group of Salesians headed by Rev. Fr. Guido D’ Amore opened the Youth Center where the boys of the community could enjoy themselves in wholesome and worthwhile recreation and at the same time receive religious training. True to its objectives, Don Bosco-Victorias embarked on technical courses: metal work, mechanics, foundry, electricity, carpentry, tailoring, and shoemaking. Don Bosco Pasil Official Name: Don Bosco Training Center and Youth Center Sto. Niño Parish of Don Bosco Location: L. Flores Street, Pasil, Cebu City Primary Service:Parish – Training Center –Youth Center – Social Services Salesian Community Directory History Parish In 1977, the Santo Niño Parish of the community was entrusted to the administration of the Salesians by His Eminence, the late Cardinal Rosales. Youth Center Youth signifies hope and promise for the future. But this hope and promise cannot be realized if the youth of today are not properly trained and educated to meet life’s challenges and difficulties. Idleness with poverty as a result of being an out-of-school has forced the young people of Pasil to engage in drug addiction and in crimes. Social Services Through Don Bosco Youth Center, Don Bosco Pasil provides social services to the children, the youth and the families in the area through the following: Nutrition Program, Scholarship Program, Medical and Dental Assistance, Free Clinic Program, Loan Assistance Program and the Daily Oratory. Don Bosco Pasil serves over 1,500 individuals through these social services and nearly 500 families. Vocational Training Center Concerned with this alarming and growing problem, Don Bosco Fathers and Brothers organized and established in 1969 the Manpower Training Center to specifically provide skills training program to poor but deserving out-of–school of the area and arm them with skills they needed to uplift their conditions in life and better still, to keep them off the streets from its evils and ploys. In keeping with chronological development sweeping the country and the industry’s demand for highly competent workers, Don Bosco- Pasil has organized its training program to specialization of Machine Shop, Automotive, Welding, Woodworking, and Dressmaking. This is also an answer to the demand of Cebu’s Economic Boom. Courses Offered Wood and Furniture Technology Automotive Technology Mechanical Technology Dress Making Technology Salesian Community Fr. It serves 5.000 children and young people in its youth and training centers and serves thousands more of the local families in its social services – medical clinic, feeding center, scholarship program. It traces its roots in 1967 when the Aboitizes, the Salesians and the SVD Fathers joined hands and embarked on a project, called Cebu Boys’ Center, designed to alleviate the sad plight of Cebu’s wayward youths to curb the burgeoning juvenile delinquency problem of the city. Following the devastating typhoon hit Cebu City with Pasil district suffering the most damage, Fr. Luis Ricciarelli offered his services by facilitating contributions from various social agencies of the city. The Salesians started their apostolate in the area slowly building the Don Bosco Youth and Training Center. The Center was built to reach out and provide guidance to out-of-school youths who would otherwise be victims of various kinds of social evils when left unattended to. During these last few years changes favorable to the creation of a more dignified community have taken place. Among the factors that contribute to the community’s social upliftment one can mention the growing sense of pride among the residents as well as the valuable contribution of the various government agencies and private civic groups. Together with these bodies Don Bosco- Pasil offers a strong, continuing program of total human development of the community. Don Bosco Boys’ Home Don Bosco Liloan Official Name: Don Bosco Boys’ Home and Training Center Location: Cotcot, Liloan, Cebu Primary Services: Technical Training Center – Residential Home and Assistance for Children in Need of Special Protection Salesian Community Directory History Don Bosco Boys’ Home and Training Center provides shelter – a home away from home to about 125 boys in elementary, in high school, and in manpower skills training/vocational course and sends them to school. The elementary boys attend classes at Tiltilon Elementary School, a half-kilometer walk; the high school boys are transported by the Boys’ Home bus to the University of Cebu- Compostela; while those enrolling in the vocational course do it in the Don Bosco Training Center, just within the compound of DBBH. Through its training center, offers them vocational skills to work and earn their bread. Shelter, school, and skills are not all. DBBH has yet something more to offer these youngsters: Salesian spirituality that encompasses the daily life duties, joy and optimism, friendship with Jesus and Mary, communion with the Church, and responsible service. DBBH envisions the Boys’ Home graduates as able to support themselves and their families; able to remain faithful to his Christian duties and able to show gratitude by supporting Boys’ Home in whatever way they can. Don Bosco Training Center DB Liloan Training Center was established in 1999, the training center offers a 12-months training program in mechanical and welding technology. Recently, woodworking technology was added to its program. The students/trainees are guided through six (6) months intensive training and six (6) months of on-the-job training in various companies, equipping graduates not only of the competitive skills for future long-term employment, but more importantly, the Salesian values that were painstakingly instilled in every graduate. You need JavaScript enabled to view it Rector History Approximately 5,000 street children roam the streets and urban barangays (communities) in the City of Cebu alone. These children proliferate as a result of widespread poverty in the rural areas, forcing families to converge in the city seeking for survival. A number of these children come from street families, where any sidewalk or vacant lot become home, sheltered from the elements with boxes and given privacy by the tattered pieces of cloth that serve as walls. To help augment the almost non-existent family income, the children engage in scavenging, begging, watch-your-car services and other odd jobs. Others become victims of syndicated crimes like snatching and prostitution. It is for these stark and painful realities that Don Bosco Boys’ Home is established. Instead of leaving these children on the streets and making them easy preys to the ills of society, Don Bosco Boys’ Home (DBBH) gives them the opportunity to help themselves in life through education and training, formation, and psycho-social interventions. The compelling force behind this endeavor is the attainment of Don Bosco’s goal of education and integral human development for the marginalized youth. With this goal comes the realization of helping these youngsters find immediate gainful employment and in the process, helping them become responsible and productive citizens of the country. |
