Youth at Work

The Salesians have placed themselves in strategic areas with the highest concentration of poor children, and work-seeking youth. In response to the growing population of out-of-school youth, the Salesians in the South hope to strengthen the eleven training centers they maintain in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Don Bosco Training Centers open up more opportunities to marginalized youth to acquire productive skills to help them through life. They also learn values that mould their character and make them good Christians and productive citizens in order to contribute in the transformation of society.

Technical training has become the hallmark of the Salesians and one of the most frequently sought for in society. Like Don Bosco, the Salesians are convinced that with this kind of ministry, they help working class youth not only to prepare themselves to join the work force in a creative manner, but also in their total development.

Some Important Shifts
Just recently, the Salesians have opened more opportunities for greater participation of women in technical training. They have also ventured into more livelihood opportunities for the rural youth, and the development of entrepreneurship programs in view of promoting self-employment in remote places. Acknowledging the fact that half of all Mindanao provinces belong to the country’s 25 poorest provinces, they also have opened centers in key locations.

Hand in Hand with Partners
Various government institutions and private corporations have been generous in their assistance to the formative work of the Salesians in the area of skills training. They reach out through generous scholarship grants, hiring of the Training Centers’ graduates, filling the shops with job orders, donations of equipment, and the sharing of their expertise.

The Salesians are seriously looking into doing ministry in the industry and corporate sectors, we term Industry Partnership. Plans are being drawn for following up their graduates in the field at the same time extend assistance to Human Resource Departments conducting human and spiritual formation programs for their employees.
